Soccer players (also referred to as football players outside the US) are persons who play soccer. The name is mostly used to refer to professional players. However, if you play in your school team, you are a soccer player too. Let’s take a look at the steps you need to take to complete a realistic drawing of a football player.

What You Will Need

  • A pencil
  • An eraser
  • A drawing piece of paper
  • Coloring supplies
  • 30 minutes

How to Draw a Soccer Player

To help you follow along easily, we are first going to show you the steps we will be following. The below image has all the 11 steps we will be following to draw a soccer player. Studying the steps will help you anticipate our steps and avoid having to start over again.

Step 1: Draw the Hair

We are going to start with our drawing paper vertical because we will be drawing the football player standing up but he is standing and will be kicking or dribbling a ball. We will start by drawing his hair starting from close to the top right corner of your drawing paper.

The first thing you should do is draw a shape that looks like half of a circle. The shape should be drawn using faint lines because we will be using it simply as a guide. Next, we will add a rough shape all around the half-circle to represent the hair. Once that is done, go ahead and erase the half circle we drew earlier. You should have something that looks like this.

Step 2: Draw the Face

With the hair ready, we can now go ahead and add the face to complete the head of the soccer player. We will draw the face on the right bottom part of the hair we just added. Use curved lines to draw a shape that has a nose, mouth, chin, and neck. Here is what our drawing looks like so far.

Do not make the head too big. This is because if it is too big, we will not have enough room to add the body of the football player. On the drawing paper, the head of the player should occupy the same amount of space that ours has occupied.

Step 3: Draw the Torso

In an earlier lesson, we looked at how to draw a soccer jersey. If you complete that lesson, this next step will be a breeze. However, if you haven’t gotten to that lesson yet, don’t feel bad. We will show you how to draw the jersey easily. The only difference is the jersey we are drawing here is being worn by the soccer player. This means it will not be proportional.

From the back of the soccer player’s neck, draw a diagonal line that rises slightly to the left and then curves downwards and towards the left. At the end of the curved line, add a straight diagonal line that slants slightly to the right then another line that extends horizontally towards the right. This shape will form the right sleeve of the player.

For the left sleeve, we will use a diagonal line that starts from below the chin of the player and extends to the right slightly before curving downwards. At the end of the curved line, add another line that slants to the left slightly then another diagonal line that rises towards the left. The left sleeve is now ready.

We will be adding the body of the soccer jersey next. This is quite easy. Start by adding a curved line that starts from the bottom line of the right sleeve and extend it downwards slightly. Add another line that starts slightly above the bottom line of the left sleeve and extends downwards to the same level as the first line. We will then connect the two lines with a curved line at the bottom. With that, the torso of our soccer player is complete.

Step 4: Draw the Shorts

The next thing we are going to draw is the shorts. We will start by drawing the right leg of the player. For this, we will add a line that connects to the bottom of the soccer jersey and extends slightly to the right. Below the line, we will add an oval shape. The oval shape should be diagonal and slightly elongated so that it is longer than it is wide.

From the bottom of the oval shape, we are going to add a curved line that extends horizontally toward the left and connects to the bottom left corner of the jersey. Do not forget that our player has a butt. For realism, make the left part of the shape we just added wide. It should look like what we have below.

For the left leg, we are going to start by adding a flattened oval shape below the right leg. The shape should be slightly diagonal. Next, use two lines to connect the left and right sides of the oval shape to the shape we added for the right leg. Here is what your drawing should look like.

Step 5: Draw Arms

Now that the clothes are ready, we are going to start by adding the arms of the player. We will start with the right arm which goes to the left side of our drawing. Use curved lines to draw a tube-like structure that extends to the left. Since our player has a clasped fist, we will add a rounded end as shown in our drawing below.

The left arm will be on the right side of our drawing. For this, draw a similar tube-like structure as we did with the right arm. For the left arm, the player will not be clasping his fist. For that reason, towards the end of the tube-like structure, we will add his thumb and forefinger. Use curved lines for this. Here is what your drawing should look like.

Step 6: Draw the Legs

What we are going to do now is add the legs. We will start with the right leg which goes into the bend part of the shorts. Start by adding a slightly curved line that starts from the top part of the oval shape we added for the right leg, extend it slightly to the right then curve it downwards and then towards the right to form the upper part of the leg.

For the back side of the leg, draw another curved line that starts slightly above the end of the oval shape, extends towards the right, curves slightly towards the first line we added then bend it towards the bottom to connect with the end of the line we added for the first line. Make sure there is ample space between the two lines in order to form the leg. It is also important that you make the back side of the leg protrude to form the calve and the heel. The right leg is ready.

For the left leg, we are going to follow the same process only that this time we will extend the leg downwards. The leg should also fill up the oval shape we added. It should look like this.

Erase the parts of the oval shape that cut through the legs of the soccer player.

Step 7: Draw the Soccer Cleats

A soccer player needs soccer cleats to protect his feet and improve traction while running on the field. This is what we are going to add next. This will be very easy. Start by drawing a line above the ankle of the player. Next, we will add some spikes on the bottom part of the feet. That will form the soccer boots/cleats.

Step 8: Draw the Cuff

The top part of the socks is known as the cuff or the welt. Soccer players wear their socks high. To draw the socks, we will simply add the cuffs. Draw curved lines right below the knees of the player. That will represent the cuffs which in turn indicates that our player is wearing socks.

Step 9: Draw the Ears and Eyes

We are now going to add the right eye and ear to our player. For the ear, simply add an incomplete oval shape below the hair, right above the ear as shown in our drawing. For the right eye, add a line for the eyebrow then below it a half oval shape to represent the eye.

Step 10: Refine Your Drawing

Our drawing is now complete. Congratulations on your progress. You should, however, not be frustrated if your drawing doesn’t look as perfect as ours. It takes practice to become a great artist. On your next attempt, you will notice that your drawing will look much better.

Take the Drawing to the Next Level

We will not leave our drawing as it is because it looks like someone who is simply running. To turn it into a soccer player, we are going to add a few things.

Step 10: Draw the Soccer Ball

The best way of turning our drawing into a soccer player is by adding a soccer ball. We will add it on the right foot of the player. Simply draw a circle with some markings inside as we did with our drawing.

Step 11: Color the Drawing

The final step is all about colors. Take out your coloring supplies and add color to your drawing. There are no rules on the colors you can use. Here is what we did to our drawing.

Conclusion

Drawing a soccer player is pretty easy when you know how to go about it. We started by drawing the head of the player then added the jersey and the shorts. We then added the arms, legs, boots, and socks and advanced our drawing by adding a soccer ball and then coloring everything.

You can use our process to draw any soccer player that you want even from a real image. Never forget to have fun while doing it.
